Ladies Day Caps

Historical Note:  The issue  "to wear or not to wear" the day cap has been an issue in re-enacting circles for some time. Here is what we have found. use it to draw your own conclusions and fit the persona whom you are portraying

"From the 1560's, even in the northern countries, there was a tendency to uncover the hair, even out of doors..."(1).

"High-dressed hair, with or without a frontage, remained in fashion for the first few years of the 18th century, as did masculine-style wigs, usually worn with a riding habit. Around 1715 a small natural-looking hair style became the vogue, and remained so with some variations until 1760; the hair was drawn back close to the head into a small bun at the back, from which a few long or short curls fell onto the neck or over the shoulder, particularly for court wear, to soften the nape." (2)

"With the frontage outmoded, caps were no longer worn for state occasions except by widows or the elderly, but they remained popular even in court circles for undress wear and were habitually worn by the middle classes." (3)

Ladies Aprons

Historical Note: Women of the working class wore an apron extensively during the mid 18th Century. Due to a working woman's hands usually being red and chapped from the harsh work and lye soap, the aprons were made fuller so she could hide her hands within the folds of the apron. Women of means wore aprons solely as an accessory to their garments. Aprons were made of solid colors as well as block printed cottons or other fabrics. Our aprons are made of 100% white cotton muslin. The aprons are designed to cover the full front and hang gracefully to about mid calf. They tie with a long sash at the waist. All are machine washable unless otherwise specified. One size fits most. Additional sizes are available by special order.

Pinner Apron: Our Pinafore or Pinner apron has a tapered bib front in the French fashion, which is pinned with small straight pins to the front of your bodice, chemise or other top garment.
