| Historical Note - Knee
Breeches: Worn by the military as well as
the middle and upper classes. Breeches were traditionally made of wool or
linen and either lined or unlined. The finest breeches were made from a
very thin deer hide and fully lined. Breeches were normally cut to ride
low on the hip. Favorite fabric colors included brown, blue, red, rust,
gold, as well as shades of green and blue along with the traditional
military white. The legs were tapered and extended 1 to 2 inches below the
knee.
Braces: (suspenders) did not come into use until shortly before the 19th Century. Up until then men held their pants up by sheer will power and prayer. |
When the waistcoats shortened around 1770, more of the crotch was exposed and the drop front style was developed to maintain the flat line of a man's front. We are in the process of standardizing our sizes. Please include a waist and hip measurement, inseam to knee and calf circumference when ordering. |
