Rubenesque Fashions - Petticoats
|
Historical Note: Petticoats like other clothing evidenced one's station in life. The lower class wore petticoats made of lesser quality fabrics and the petticoat was not as full or as long as those of the upper classes. Where a ladies petticoat might be floor or ankle length, a working woman's could be somewhere between knee and calf to accommodate movement. Additionally, it was not uncommon in the colder months to wear as many petticoats as necessary to keep warm. Petticoats were made from all available fabrics from the very rough fustian to a very fine silk or linen.(1) The colors also depended upon the station of the wearer. A fine lady might wear a petticoat of light color whereas a working woman would prefer one in a dark color, which would not show the dirt. However, for Sunday dress or special occasions, even the lower class woman would have as best a petticoat as she could afford. Petticoats for the most part had drawstrings around the waist to accommodate the growth and shrinkage of a woman's waist and had 2 pocket holes on either side. Fitted waistbands were rare and mainly reserved for the wealthier ladies. (1). Historic Colonial French Dress, Johnson, Forbes, Delaney (Smoke & Fire News, 1997) |
