How to measure for a Proper Fit if you are unsure of your measurements!

A PROPER FIT
or 25 Ways to Insure a Well Fitting Garment

Ghost Forge’s system for taking measurements is different from that of other re-enactment clothiers; please pay attention to the directions.  You will need a tape measure; a tablet; a writing utensil, and some assistance from a friend.  A friend to help you take your measures is necessary because they can easily be distorted when you try to do them yourself.  When measuring, lay the tape measure flat against the skin, don’t pull it tight, or let it hang.  If you want the garment extra loose or tight don’t build it into your measurements.  Make any sizing adjustments as comments on a separate page. If you have any questions about how measurements should be taken, please call or e-mail.  Note that any measurement mistakes on your part will be fixed at your cost.

IMPORTANT: Take your measurements over top of whatever other garments will be worn underneath the pending costume creation, such as a set of stays and chemise or shirt and pants, etc.

General Measurement Instructions:
To find the true back of the neck, tilt your head forward so that knobby bone at the back of the neck (the cervical vertebra) is obvious.  That point is the back of the neck, or your nape.

To find the smallest circumference around your waist, tie a string around the general waist area.  The string will naturally slip to the narrowest part of your trunk. This should be your natural waist.

Where to measure:

1. chest/ bust:

2. waist (natural waist, not below tummy!):

3. hips:

4. tummy, (The fullest part please!):

5. neck:

6. neck at collarbone down to nipple:

7. breadth of shoulders in back:

8. arm extended (nape to wrist):

9. arm bent (nape to wrist):

10. upper arm circumference:

11. arm pit/ bottom of sleeve to waist (side measurement):

12. point of shoulder to 1" past wrist:

13. point of shoulder to elbow:

14. wrist circumference:

15. nape to waist (back measurement):

16. inseam (crotch to ankle)

17. inseam to bend of knee:

18. back rise (center of crotch to waist in back)

19. front rise (center of crotch to waist in front)

20. thigh circumference:

21. calf circumference:

22. circumference just below knee:

23. waist to knee (out seam)

24. waist to ankle (out seam or skirt length)

25. nape to ankle (cape length)
