The Ruben's Man™ Shirts
Historical Note - Shirts:  Traditionally, a man's shirt was like a woman's chemise in that it was considered an undergarment. The shirt was worn during the day to work and at night for sleeping.

Flannel: Can be cotton or wool in various weights and textures. It is a plain or twill woven fabric with a brushed surface partially concealing the weave. Cotton flannel became available around 1650. Flannelette is a lighter weight cotton flannel also known as Canton Flannel.

Trade Shirts: Traditionally, a trade shirt was made of printed fabric and used by traders for dealing with the Indians. Both traders and Indians wore the printed trade shirt. (1)

Dress Shirts: Shirts of the middle and upper classes had a ruffle, lace, or embroidery at the neck and cuffs. Ruffles on shirts were used not only  as adornments but to cover food spots and dirty wrists, hands and grubby fingernails. From about 1710 forward the shirt ruffles were allowed to protrude from the opening of the upper buttons of the waistcoat (2). Additionally, the showing of ruffles, lace, or embroidery was too evident that the wearer was not of the working class, or that at least he did not work with his hands.

All of our shirt offerings have substantial underarm gussets and added fullness at the neck and shoulders to make the shirts most comfortable. Length falls to about mid-thigh, great with breeches, breechclout or leggings. Check our sizing chart for a proper fit.
