Historical Note - Waistcoats: In the 16th Century the waistcoat was considered an undergarment and gradually became an outer garment. The length of the waistcoat grew shorter as the 18th Century progressed.1  The waistcoats worn by the middle and upper classes often had a cheaper fabric for lining and back, as only the front portion would be seen from under the top coats. The working class, who often could not afford a top coat had their waistcoats made all around with the same fabric. The waistcoats worn by the middle and upper classes did not have lacing/venting in the  back or sides as they could afford to have another waistcoat made when one became too soiled or small. It was the working class which logically had to look for ways to make the few clothes they had  go the farthest. Hence it was logical for the waistcoat to have lacing that began way up at the top of the back and ran down to the hem for adjusting size. 1) Tidings from the 18th Century, Gilgun (Scurlock Publishing, 1993)	Make sure of a proper fit using our Sizing Chart. 	Tradesman Waistcoat: 1765-1778 Our Tradesman Waistcoat falls to about hip level. same basic styling as the earlier 1750's version of waistcoat, only the fronts are the same length as the shorter backs. Closures & Buttons: We use hand poured pewter or brass buttons. Care of Fabrics: We strongly recommend dry cleaning, but you could hand wash cold using a mild soap. Lay flat to dry. Iron/press on appropriate fabric setting with a pressing cloth.
